Abstract:

Type C-1 restrainers were used in most of the concrete T- and box girder bridges which have been retrofit. Type C-1 restrainers consist of 7-3/4 in. diam. galvanized cables, bearing plates, drum, and bolster. Other types of longitudinal restrainers used were: 1) the bar restrainer consisting of 1- 1/4 in. diam. galvanized threaded high strength bars satisfying ASTM A722, nuts, bearing plate, and reinforced concrete bolster; and the deck slab bracket restrainer, consisting of 7-3/4 in. diam. galvanized cables, 2-12 in. high by 20 in. wide by 44 in. long welded steel brackets, and 24 - 1-3/8 in. diam. A325 bolts. The objective of the present paper is to give the results and findings of a structural test program performed on a full scale representative portion of a box girder bridge hinge which has been retrofit with either hinge diaphragm cable restrainers, hinge bar restrainers, or deck slab bracket restrainer.
