LRFD: Progress for Engineers and the Wood Industry

Abstract:

The LRFD for Wood project represents a milestone for the industry. The significance of the project goes far beyond merely switching formats in design equations. The project signifies both a step backward and a step forward. It is a step backward to a time when wood was considered to be a major structural material for projects large and small - backward to a time when available data were combined with perceptive judgments to produce design documents for our engineering 'consumers.' It is a step forward past the times when we focused exclusively on commodity applications while neglecting our engineering customers. The LRFD for Wood project recognizes that all wood products have a place in engineered applications.
