Abstract:

This paper is a review of aerodynamic retrofit techniques for long-span bridges. The discussion includes a description of the aerodynamic problems of static divergence, flutter, buffeting, vortex-shedding and vehicle interactions; and the various retrofit techniques that can alleviate these problems such as: structural and shape modifications, additional damping, tuned mass dampers, winglet dampers, and active controls.
