Abstract:

The analysis and design of reinforced concrete framed tube buildings is formulated as a nonlinear optimization problem and solved using modern design optimization software. The influence of column spacing, spandrel beam stiffness, column stiffness, and other design variables on the overall cost is studied. A brief review of tall building design considerations and framed tube behavior is presented, as well as a discussion of the analysis methods employed, and some specific aspects of computer implementation.
