Abstract:

This paper examines the roles of idealization and discretization in engineering analysis and design. Physical idealizations as commonly used in analysis and design are non-analytic in nature, and are, therefore, perfect candidates for compterization using knowledge-based techniques. This paper also presents the overall structure of a modeling system that can support idealizations for analysis as part of the design process.
