Abstract:

The ultimate strength of axially loaded jumbo columns with biaxial initial out-of-straightnesses is analyzed by the finite element method. The analysis makes use of the measured residual stresses on a W14 ? 455 section and assumed as well as measured camber and sweep. The ultimate strengths are compared with those of uniaxially crooked columns and of a light column. Comparison is also made with the column formulas in the AISC Load and Resistance Factor Design Specification.
