Abstract:

Transmission line insulator assemblies made up of ceramic or composite insulators and associated hardware are used to mechanically support and electrically isolate energized conductors from support structures. Because of their dual functions of mechanical support and electrical isolation, several different materials are used in the construction of insulators. The performance and reliability of these insulators in service is dependent on the materials and the complicated interaction at the multitude of material interfaces.
