Abstract:

The AASHO Road Test of 1958-60 grew out of a need to quantify the effects of increasingly heavier axle and gross loads and varying wheel load configurations on the performance of this country's highways and bridges. The number of 18,000 pound axle loadings in 1949 had increased to 6 1/2 times that of the 1936-37 period and that this country's pavements were deteriorating at an accelerating rate. This study describes the road test methods and procedures and consequent changes and modifications of pavement design guides.
