Abstract:

Sponsored by a special projects committee under the guidance of the Sedimentation Technical Committee of ASCE.

This collection contains noteworthy, often-quoted papers by Brigadier Ralph Alger Bagnold, who is especially well-known for his pioneering work on wind blown sands in deserts. Over a period of nearly 60 years, he published dozens of papers on sediment transport in the oceans, on beaches, and in rivers. Many of these papers remain standard works on their topics and form the basis for much of the progress achieved by subsequent researchers. In fact, practically all authoritative articles that are in any way concerned with sediment transport are found to reference Bagnold's work. With the importance and diversity of Bagnold's work in mind, 14 papers were selected for inclusion, accompanied by a complete bibliography of Bagnold's published papers and a short biography.

Subject Headings: Sediment transport | Littoral drift | Water supply systems | Soil water | Sand (hydraulic) | Wave velocity | Wave measurement
