Abstract:

A rational procedure for characterization of water depths for a random sea state is developed, in context with linearized wave theory. The importance of using the expressions for 'intermediate water depths' is established. Numerical algorithms for horizontal and vertical propagation of kinematics are developed. A variety of techniques, involving both digital and analog filters, are used. The filter coefficients are obtained as functions of the propagation distance which is normalized by the local water depth. This procedure is proposed as an alternative to the conventional method of simulation which involves superposition of harmonics with random phases.
