Geologic Assessment of Seismotectonic Hazards

Abstract:

Design and modification of dams require evaluation of potential seismotectonic hazards based on consideration of the historic earthquake record and deterministic evaluation of geologic evidence for past earthquake activity. These data allow characterization of potential hazard and are critical to risk-based analyses. Recent studies in the Intermountain Seismic Belt of southwestern Wyoming and north-central Utah highlight methods, results and potential uncertainties associated with deterministic assessment of earthquake hazards.
