Abstract:

An automatic calibration strategy applied to land and channel components of the National Weather Service River Forecast System is outlined. Aspects discussed include the objective function to be used, nonlinear optimization technique used, and reparameterization issues. An example of the use of this strategy on Bird Creek, Oklahoma, is presented and results discussed. A new optimization technique based on linear model approximations is presented which explicitly incorporates parameter interaction effects. The interaction between the complex model structure and the optimization technique is addressed.
