Abstract:

Many existing small embankment dams in the United States cannot safely pass current design floods without overtopping. In the past several years, embankment overtopping protection has been used as a cost effective alternative to more traditional alternatives, such as spillway enlargement. This paper presents a discussion of some of the considerations in designing overtopping protection with two different technologies: roller compacted concrete and cable-tied concrete blocks.
