Abstract:

While surface heat transfer is important in lakes and reservoirs, solar radiation, which penetrates the water surface and is absorbed in the water column, also exists. In this work, a revised scaling is proposed which accounts for adsorption of solar radiation below the surface in addition to the surface fluxes. This scaling is compared to earlier ones through application of a mixed-layer model to Green Lake, Jamesville, NY, a wind-sheltered meromictic lake where convective mixing dominates in the mixed layer.
