Abstract:

The selection of a communication system for the automation of a canal system requires careful consideration of the type of canal system operation desired, the location of the facilities to be automated, the reliability requirements of the canal system operation, and the lifetime communication system cost. Each of these criteria must be evaluated before the appropriate communication system can be selected. After the selection of the proper type of communication system, the design, installation, and quality of maintenance, of the communication equipment will determine the overall success of any canal automation project. The purpose of this paper is to present various types of communication systems, how each is applied to canal operations, and descriptions of implementation that will lead to successful designs of canal automation projects.
