Abstract:

A variety of approaches to irrigation management and system operation exist and great care should be taken in selecting the one to be used in new or rehabilitation/modernization projects. This paper examines the objectives of an irrigation system from different perspectives and reviews the physical, managerial and socio-economic factors to be considered in the definition of operating rules and in the selection of appropriate control technology. Finally, some general recommendations on this selection process are presented.
