Abstract:

The two-volume Proceedings of Coastal Sediments '87 contain more than 150 full papers delivered at a specialty technical conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers held on May 12-13, 1987 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The conference dealt with the physical aspects of sediment processes in the coastal environment. The papers cover three major themes: Fundamentals of coastal sediment transport, engineering and coastal sedimentary processes, and coastal geologic processes. The effects of seawalls on the coast is also discussed. Examples of the wide range of coastal sediment-related phenomena covered include sediment transport, beach and nearshore sedimentation, cohesive sediment processes, beach profile change, shoreline change, storm erosion, beach morphodynamics, eolian sand transport, coastal structure and sediment interaction, seawall and beach interaction, beach fill, and sediment budgets. These phenomena are reviewed in relation to physical models, numerical models, analytical techniques, acoustic instrumentation, and field measurement projects.
