Abstract: Sensitive area assessment (SAA) has a role in environmental impact assessment and as a resource management tool for oil and gas activities on Canada's frontier lands, onshore and offshore. This paper: (1) provides a historical summary of SAA in oil and gas activities in Canada; (2) highlights recent legislative changes and their implications for SAA and (3) offers insight on how SAA can be successfully integrated into Canada's new oil and gas decision making processes.
