by David E. Ortman, N. W. Friends of the Earth, Seattle, WA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Coastal Zone '87

Abstract:

Washington State was the first state to have its coastal zone program (WACZMP) approved in 1976 and has undergone the longest adaptation in its search for solutions to coastal problems. However, its coastal zone program was based on existing state laws. This paper describes the WACZMP, the nature of these routine program implementations, as well as the amendments which have been proposed or made to the WACZMP. In addition, an evaluation is made assessing the State's coastal management activities and trends during this past decade.
