Abstract: The objective of this paper is to encourage a careful review of the interactions between engineers and bioenvironmental scientists (biologists, ecologists, and ecotoxicologists) as they attempt to deal with urban runoff problems. This review begins by assessing the differences in tradition and training between engineers who deal almost exclusively with physical systems and the bioenvironmental scientists who deal almost exclusively with living systems. The differences in data, data variability, and the interpretation of data used by engineers and bioenvironmental scientists are discussed. This paper also reviews data collection activities which are appropriate for engineers and bioenvironmental scientists and briefly discusses acceptable standards of performance for each discipline.
