Abstract:

Microcomputer based expert systems will assist construction industry by: changing the construction manager's role from day-to-day decision making to strategic planning and analysis of difficult cases; making available expertise of many construction professionals to small contractors; and modeling and fundamentally studying the ill-defined construction operations. Although some question the possibility of implementing expert systems on today's personal computers, but with the introduction of advance microcomputers, the difference between microcomputers and minicomputers is shrinking fast. Within the next few years microcomputers will approach the power of today's minicomputers, making them increasingly attractive for expert system application. This paper discusses microcomputer-based expert system tools, expert systems in construction, and shell programs.
