Abstract:

This paper presents SIMSUPER5 (SIMulation SUPERvisor version 5) a computer program developed to simulate the tunnel construction process under conditions of uncertainty. The program determines the impact of changes in excavation and initial support methods on the advance rate. It can be used to estimate advance rates for different construction methods and to estimate the variability of advance rates under changing ground conditions. The basic structure of SIMSUPER5 is explored in this paper and its use is illustrated with an example of the simulated construction of a tunnel segment.
