Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Computing in Civil Engineering

Abstract:

Materials management computer systems store, sort, combine and print data files pertaining to materials requisitions, purchase orders, vendor evaluations, and warehouse inventories. The systems are used in an interactive mode by a wide range of project personnel to communicate materials information to and from engineering designers, project managers, purchasing managers, warehouse personnel and the crafts. As part of two recently completed research projects funded by the Construction Industry Institute, the author has examined microcomputer, minicomputer and mainframe computer based materials management systems. The overall structure of these systems is discussed, as are the costs of developing and using these systems, and the benefits that can be derived from their use.
