Abstract:

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has a decentralized organization with a central office staff providing functional and policy analysis and eight district offices scattered throughout the state to administer the design, construction and maintenace of transportation facilities and provide the other services required of the department. The need to improve the 'project management' systems available to the management staff has been recognized in many different ways throughout the department. Several attempts at developing systems of projects management are in place, or are being considered for use by the staff. This paper discusses various systems and methods being considered, including financial operating system, managers project information system, preconstruction engineering management system, and others.
