Abstract:

CAPPS (Custom Architectured Parallel Processing System) is under development at Paragon Pacific Inc. , Torrance, CA, for the solution of computationally intensive engineering problems. The primary design objectives of CAPPS are high computational speeds and a high degree of programmability. CAPPS consists of a network of custom designed computational units (CUs), each of which is a high performance digital computer. Each CU can execute programs independently of the others, thus forming a truly parallel processing system. A unique feature of the CAPPS design is that all data transfers among the CUs take place concurrently with the execution of instructions. This eliminates the problem of performance degradation due to data transfers (sometimes referred to as 'IO Overhead') which plagues many parallel processors. Also given in the paper are brief descriptions of the application of CAPPS to problems in dynamic simulation.
