Abstract:

This paper briefly reviews the classification and general architecture of supercomputers: their capabilities, promise, current and projected limitations are considered. The author reviews some of the results of supercomputer applications. In conclusion he examines the impact of supercomputer on scientific computation; and identifies current directions and their significance for the future of such applications.
