Abstract:

A study was performed to identify problems and to document solutions in the design, operation, and maintenance of heat treatment and low pressure oxidation systems for conditioning sludge prior to dewatering in municipal wastewater treatment plants. This paper provides a basic understanding of thermal conditioning processes, as well as guidelines for the design of new heat treatment and low pressure oxidation facilities and the upgrading of existing facilities. Design considerations; operational characteristics; process, equipment, and operational problems; and possible solutions to these problems are also addressed.
