Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Ports '86

Abstract:

Research on the strength characteristics of wet Southern Pine and Douglas Fir piling and poles is presented. Included are background information on wood's strength characteristics, timber piling compression tests from the University of Colorado, and wood pole bending tests from Colorado State. Test results are summarized as untreated strength versus pile length or approximate diameter. Recommendations include consideration of the 10% exclusion limit for variability, a strength reduction for treatment, and site-specific variable safety factors for use above and below the mud line. A typical analysis is presented using the new test data.
