Abstract:

As part of the recent U. S. -Japan Cooperative Research Program on the seismic performance of buildings, a 1/5-scale model of a 7-story reinforced concrete frame-wall structure, was constructed and subsequently tested on the earthquake simulator at the University of California at Berkeley. In order to analytically trace the response of this structure using a computer program restricted to nonlinear dynamic planar behavior, special modeling techniques had to be developed. The paper presents methods for modeling three-dimensional structural response with computer programs which are designed for planar response analysis. The methods, as applied to the U. S. -Japan R/C test structure provided a fair degree of correlation with the experimental response.
