Abstract:

This paper focuses on potential applications of the AISD. (A knowledge-based concept for automating the interpretation of sensor data) concept in civil engineering. A number of potential applications are proposed in the areas of site investigation, construction monitoring and control, and condition assessment. The potential value of the AISD approach is assessed, based on a number of generic features, for each potential application. One application, the high speed sensing of bridge deck deterioration, is developed as a prototype example. Discussion of the knowledge-base and computational tools developed for this example illustrates a basic approach which can be used to address other civil engineering applications.
