Abstract: Construction commenced in early 1985 on the 1. 0 billion Piedra del Aguila Hydroelectric Project on the Rio Limay about 1200 km (750 mi) southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The project consists of a 163-m high concrete gravity dam and a powerhouse with 4 units rated at 350 MW each with provisions for 2 additional units. The estimated average annual energy production is 5500 GWh. This paper discusses the planning and design aspects of the project, including the selection of dam type and power plant capacity, river diversion scheme, geology and foundation treatment, and salient features of the project layout.
