Abstract: As more and more lawbreakers are put behind bars, more and more prisons are needed, so the opportunities for civil engineers are expanding. Three major types of construction are being used to add cells to the nation's penal system: new construction, modular construction, and renovation. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. All, however, are radically different in design and construction management than non-prison structures.
