Abstract:

The results from two relatively recent instrumented caisson load tests from different sites on Chicago Hardpan are compared with a 'classic' large scale caisson load test program performed in 1921. Actual bearing capacities, side friction values and settlement are compared with that predicted by different theories. No single theory fits the measured bearing capacities and friction values, but settlement predicted by pressuremeter theory based on actual site specific pressuremeter test data agrees well (within 15%) with the reported measured settlement.
