Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Abstract:

The economic and social pressures that have pushed skyscrapers higher above our cities have also brought forth new structural systems for tall buildings. As this trend is expected to continue in the future, new solutions must be found that exhibit structural integrity, economy and aesthetic sensitivity. The demand for a very efficient structural system for tall and super tall buildings has fueled the investigation of a new generation of tall buildings. It is not only seen as economical, but also has great potential for integration of the structural system with the architectural expression of these super tall buildings. This paper explores some of the various structural systems presently used or anticipated for use in tall and super tall buildings and describes how they influence the architectural/structural expression of these buildings.
