Abstract:

Technology which was developed for economic and rapid construction of precast concrete segmental box girder bridges is being utilized to permit the reconstruction of an urban freeway in San Antonio, Texas. These design and construction techniques which will be utilized will include span by span erection, external post tensioning tendons, progressive erection of the spans from the previously completed superstructure, transverse pretentioning of the top slab, and erection from twin triangular trusses supported from the piers. Essential criteria for the project included aesthetically acceptable structure design and minimum interference with existing traffic.
