Aeration is the Solution for Sluice Cavitation Damage at Libby Dam, Montana

by Richard P. Regan, US Army Corps of Engineers, Chief, Hydraulics Section, Seattle, WA, USA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Water for Resource Development

Abstract:

Cavitation has severely damaged two of the high-head flood control sluices. The damaged areas were immediately patched; however, these patches were not considered a solution to the problem. An extensive program was undertaken to determine the cause of the cavitation and to develop corrective measures. The damage, studies accomplished to solve the problem, structural modifications completed, and the resulting sluice performance are discussed.
