Abstract:

A one-dimensional consolidation analysis including prediction of consequent shear strength increase for soft soils which exhibit large secondary compression is proposed. Consolidation and strength characteristics of two kinds of organic soils have been determined from laboratory tests carried out in the Rowe cell and standard triaxial cell. Observations at a test embankment site in Poland have shown good agreement between predicted and measured settlement and shear strength values.
