Abstract:

A software package (CATSIG) is described which allows the user to interactively color shade geometric objects created on a sophisticated commercial CAD system (CATIA). The novel features include the ability to interactively change colors, position light sources to achieve desired reflections and rotate color shaded objects. Reasonable performance was obtained by encoding certain rendering algorithms in microcode. However, hardware accelerators will be needed to provide the degree of interaction required in CAD applications.
