Abstract:

Highligts of the major changes in building design and construction over the past decade are presented from a structural engineer's viewpoint. The areas covered include: (1) The development of interior composite buildings; (2) structural trends in low-rise and mid-rise buildings; (3) the growing popularity of the haunched girder system; and (4) the use of post-tensioning in hotels and casinos. Examples of recently constructed buildings in Houston are described. The revolution in building architecture and the growing role of structural engineers in skin design are also examined.
