Abstract: An analytical method for determining natural frequencies and mode shapes of multispan suspension bridges is developed by using a solution for the fourth order linearized differential equations. This method takes into account the support conditions of stiffening girders and the effect of flexural stiffness of towers and can be calculated to higher eigenvalues accurately. The dynamic response of multispan suspension bridges traversed by moving loads with constant velocity is studied. The analysis is conducted by the method of modal analysis. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the analysis and to investigate the dynamic characteristics of suspension bridges.
