Some fundamental aspects of bridge structural innovation and economy are reviewed. Historical examples of bridge innovation are presented and examined broadly. The author cites some of his first-hand experiences with innovative bridgework design and construction, and comments on technical and financial considerations and on the results achieved. The various ways in which owners, designing engineers, and contractors are inclined to view bridge structural innovation are described. Significant factors retarding bridge structural innovation and economy are discussed, and solutions suggested.
