Based on the distribution of transport rate, the fluctuation of bed load and its application to hydrological measurement have been studied. The variance and coefficient of variation of transport rate for uniform sand and nonuniform sand with determinate and random size distribution have been derived. The relationship between the coefficient of variation of transport rate measured for the whole cross section and that of the local points has been obtained. All this will make it possible to determine the sampling duration with the desired accuracy or to estimate the accuracy available from the sampling duration performed.
