Abstract: Most of the analytical solutions presently available for the dynamic response of a soil medium are for the case of a surface footing. However, a few investigators have recently used the finite element method to investigate the effect of embedment on the dynamic soil response. Lysmer and Kuhlemeyer studied the case of a circular footing, whereas Kameswara Rao and Dasgupta assumed a plane strain case by considering a dynamic strip land on the footing. In the present investigation, the plane strain assumption is made and isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral elements with consistent mass metrix have been used. The results show the deficiency of the model used by Kameswara Rao and Dasgupta.
