Abstract: The many factors that affect the standard penetration test variability have been listed and examined qualitatively by Fletcher and others. One factor listed is the rod linking the split spoon sampler to the surface. Intuitively, one would expect the rod stiffness and inertia to affect the SPT resistance. Several different approaches have been used to evaluate the influence of rod type on the SPT.
