Abstract: Using Chow's procedure to calculate gradually varied flow profiles in channels with variable hydraulic exponents may lead to large errors because of an erroneous assumption in the formulation of the basic equation. This paper identifies the source of the error and presents a generalized procedure which overcomes these discrepancies. Regarding the extensive use of Chow's procedure in standard text and handbooks dealing with open-channel hydraulics, it is hoped that this paper will help to present a corrected method.
