Abstract: As part of an extensive study of the resistance to lateral loads of piles in pile groups, a series of full-scale tests was conducted. The selected test site was representative of field conditions that the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation encountered during design/construction of bridges. The purpose of this note is to report on their experience in measuring the lateral displacements of the piles with an inclinometer that the Slope Indicator Company supplied. Based on the reported results, inclinometers of currently available sensitivity appear unsuitable for measuring lateral displacements of piles in the field where multiple piles are joined by rigid caps.
