An Approach to O|u = 0 Analysis for Stage Construction

Abstract: In the two-stage construction of an embankment, if rapid construction occurs in the second stage, a stability analysis can be performed for the finished height of the embankment using the total stress method instead of the effective stress analysis, particularly if the gain in the undrained strength of the subsoil due to dissipation of pore pressure under the sustained first-stage loading or preload is known. This note presents a method of estimating the gain in strength.
