A general solution is derived for the linearized shallow water equations describing flow in a wide channel with constant bed slope, with a known time- and space-dependent lateral inflow, and for a known upstream hydrograph. The method used is that of the Green's function; it has the advantage of facilitating computations and of providing a unified treatment for both the upstream inflow and the lateral inflow problem. The method can also be used to solve the linear diffusion approximation of the system.
