Theoretical and experimental results are presented concerning the stability of skeletal arch frameworks related to shallow vault roofs. The theoretical considerations incorporate both an energy formulation and a discrete element formulation that is essentially exact and permits gross deformation to be examined. Experimental results are obtained, up to the occurrence of buckling from small scale perspex structures. Variations in the loading pattern, member sizes and boundary conditions are considered. Good agreement is obtained between theory and experiment.
