Abstract: A scheme for subclassification of office live loads is analyzed by comparing the minimum excess costs of office buildings realizable by successively finer subclassifications. The effect of design life of a structure on the first two moments (mean and variance) of the lifetime maximum live load is studied by a distribution-free analysis. The results are used to derive a set of live load factors that, in a consistent way, account for the effects of the tributary area and design life of a structure.
